Black Sails | Sterling Silver | Statement Brooch

I brought sweeping lines and dark, shimmering texture together in Black Sails. Like a sail catching an uncertain wind, this brooch holds a sense of motion in its crossed silver bars, layered mesh, and loosely draped chains.

I love the contrast between the mesh’s tiny reflective surfaces and the deeper shadows beneath them. Light moves across the piece unevenly, revealing different textures as the angle changes.

I gave the sterling silver bars a hammered surface, letting their irregular marks stand against the fluid layers below. For me, that tension between structure and movement is the heart of this piece. At five inches wide, Black Sails makes a sculptural statement. I finished it with a double-pinned back to help keep its sweeping shape positioned as intended.
